I’mstudyinginacitythat’sfamousforitswalls.Peoplewhovisitmycityareamazedattheimposingsightofitswalls,especiallywhensilhouettedagainstthesettingsunwithgold,shiningstreaks.Theold,crackedbricksarecoveredwithlichensandthewallsareweather-beatenguardsstandingstillforcenturies.

Ourancestorslikedtobuildwalls.TheybuiltwallsinBeijing,Xi’an,Nanjingandmanyothercities,andtheybuilttheGreatWall,whichsnakesacrosshalfourcountry.Theybuiltwallstoprotectagainstenemiesandevilspirits.Thistraditionhassurvivedtothisday:westillhavemanyparksandschoolswalledofffromthepublic.

Foralongtime,wallswereoneofthemostnaturalthingsintheworldtome.

Myperceptions,however,changedafterImadeahikingtriptotheeasternsuburbsofmycity.MyclassmatesandIwerewalkingwithsomeforeignstudents.Aswewalkedoutofthecity,wefoundourselvesflankedbytalltrees,whichformedawidecanopyaboveourheads.Suddenlyoneforeignstudentaskedme,“Whereistheentrancetotheeasternsuburbs?”
